Consumers have so many choices when it comes to lodging. One bad Yelp review can Scarlet Letter a Hotel or Resort. That is why Managers must be meticulous about its reputation. If you can take on that kind of responsibility, you may have a future in Hotel Management.

Hotel Management is a competitive field; however, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, 150 schools and colleges offer programs of study to help you stand out from your competition.

Education

Now sure, you can land a hotel or motel manager job right out of high school. But it would be wiser for you to pursue a 2 year or 4 year degree to give you the opportunity to manage more than just a mundane roadside motel.

Keep in mind, It’s pretty much standard to have a bachelor’s degree in this field for the better positions, and majoring in Hospitality or Hotel Management are most fitting. You can expect the course of study to include classes in finance, accounting, business, marketing, computer training, economics, food service management, and, of course, hospitality. Some schools offer advanced degrees at the Masters level in Hospitality Management. Those are often obtained by current Managers who are looking to move forward to Regional Management positions within their companies.

Advancement

Once you have your Bachelors or Masters; you need to choose a school with internship opportunities; you may land a job at a top notch resort! then what?

You should look into certification to boost your credibility as a manager. The American Hotel and Lodging Educational Institute offers certifications for current Lodging Managers. They are like continuing education for those in Hotel Management. You will stay on top of current trends and prove your expertise in the field.

Types of Managers

Managing is a high stress field. Often you will need to oversee the entire operations of a full service hotel. If you advance to Regional Management your position may become more specific. A solid educational foundation will prepare you for these positions.
