The Best Scholarships for Women

Women are historically underrepresented in many fields, and at the highest levels of education overall. While this is changing, there’s still much to be done to remedy longstanding inequalities. One innovation to alleviate these inequities is scholarships and fellowships that are aimed specifically at women scholars, researchers, and students.

In this resource we’ve compiled 40 of the scholarships and fellowships that are available to women. Many are for particular educational disciplines, or are offered to women in different states, or through colleges and universities. Some are more general, and can be accessed by women all over the country, or world, regardless of what they’re studying.

To qualify for these awards, scholarships, and fellowships you’ll often need to demonstrate academic excellence, financial need, letters of recommendation, personal essays, as well as share a plan for what you’ll do with the funds you receive, and in your career.

M. Hildred Blewett Fellowship

• For women wishing to return to physics research careers after an interruption. One year fellowship to be used for dependent care, salary, tuition, equipment, travel, and tuition/fees.

NOAA’s Dr. Nancy Foster Scholarship Program

Congressional Fellowship on Women and Public Policy

• For graduate students or those who have completed a graduate program in the past 18 months. Will work for one academic year as a congressional legislative aide. Must have a proven commitment to equality for women.

Nurses Educational Funds Scholarships

Lucy Hanes Chatham Scholarship

• For a woman attending Salem College. Must have a 3.0 GPA and maintain full-time residency to retain the award.

• For young women who are within the bounds of a participating chapter. Based on academic achievement, work experience, and leadership.

M.A. Cartland Shackford Medical Fellowship

• Intended for graduates of any American college or university. For women studying dentistry, medicine, or veterinary medicine at a graduate or doctoral level.

• Minimum 3.3 GPA required. For women studying or planning to study a degree with a focus in cybersecurity.

• For a mature woman whose education in nuclear science, nuclear engineering, or a nuclear-related field was delayed.

• For women attending Stevens College in any discipline.

• Preference given to computer related engineering majors.

Sarah Bradley Tyson Memorial Fellowship

• Need excellentc credentials and to be studying agriculture or horticulture. Intense application process required.

• Must be a graduate student at State University of New York at Stony Brook and/or performing their thesis research at Brookhaven National Laboratory and be admitted as a doctoral candidate.

• AAUW also offers fellowships (short and long term) for women. These include opportunites for publishing, research, and dissertation work.

Educational Foundation for Women in Accounting

• Many awards for women working and studying accounting at all levels of higher education. You may apply for multiple scholarships depending on your qualifications.

STEPHEN BUFTON MEMORIAL EDUCATIONAL FUND

GoGirl! Grants

• Have supplied 147 local women with more than $500,000 in grants. Must be 25 or older, enrolled in at least two classes, working towards an undergraduate degree or certification, and have a specific plan for how an educational pathway will lead to a career.

M. Hildred Blewett Fellowship

• The M. Hildred Blewert Fellowship It’s offered to female students pursuing careers in physics. To be eligible for this award you must have completed a PhD and be able to provide written proof. This is a $45,000 scholarship. During the tenure of your grant you must have an institutional affiliation with the US or Canadian institution and be a US or Canadian citizen or legal resident or resident alien who is eligible to work in the United States or Canada.
